Moving From Consumers to Creators: Reflections on the “AI for Child Growth and Learning” Workshop
Last week in Accra, the energy in the room at Open Foundation West Africa was palpable. We didn’t just gather to talk about the latest technology trends; we gathered with a shared, urgent mission: to ensure that as technology access expands across Africa, it is used to truly nurture our children’s creativity, critical thinking, and well-being.
As an educator and facilitator, I have seen too often how children consume technology passively. Our goal with the “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Holistic Child Growth and Learning” workshop, hosted in partnership with Open Foundation West Africa (OFWA) and Expanding Boundaries International (EBI), was to change that narrative.
We set out to equip teachers, parents, and caregivers with practical tools to use AI responsibly. We wanted to move beyond the fear of tech and toward a future where children can create fearlessly and learn safely in a digital world.
Looking back on the session, I am deeply moved by the engagement and the profound insights that emerged from our diverse group of attendees.
Key Takeaway: Children Are Not “Exam Machines”
One of the most resonant themes of the day was the shift towards holistic learning. In a high-pressure educational environment, it’s easy to focus solely on grades.
Attendee Joshua Nii Lartey Sackey captured this perfectly in his feedback, noting a clear standout lesson: “Children are not exam machines. Their growth is academic, emotional, creative, and practical, and AI can support all these areas when we guide it with intention.”
Another participant, Akoto Yesher Eyram (the “GenZ Guy”), echoed this, realizing that “holistic growth really matters paaa.” He noted that AI isn’t just for homework help; it is a tool to nurture social-emotional and life skills, provided we guide it well.
Practical Magic: The ACT Framework and Learning Hubs
We didn’t want this to be just theory. We wanted participants to leave with strategies they could use immediately.
Two practical elements stood out as favorites among the crowd:
1. The ACT Framework for Prompting AI is only as good as the instructions we give it. To move past generic AI responses, we introduced the simple “ACT” method to structure prompts:
-
A: Act: Define who the AI should be (e.g., “Act as a compassionate primary school teacher in Ghana…”).
-
C: Context: Describe the learner’s needs and environment.
-
T: Task: State the exact output you want.
It was amazing to see the lightbulbs go on as participants tried this. As Akoto humorously mentioned, “Now my prompts dey behave!”
2. Building Personal Learning Hubs We also got our hands dirty building personal learning hubs using Google Sites. Watching educators and parents realize how easily they could create meaningful, personalized digital learning pathways for their children was inspiring. It showed that impactful digital tools don’t don’t have to be complicated or expensive.
The Human Element is the Compass
As the facilitator, my biggest takeaway came from listening to the participants. The technology is moving fast, but our cultural values, our wisdom, and our human connection must lead the way.
The opening remarks by Jael Serwaa Boateng set a powerful foundation on ethics, and Joshua summarized the sentiment of the room beautifully:
“AI is powerful, but the human mind is still the compass. It works best when we guide it with our values, culture, and lived experience.”
It was also heartwarming to see the community building happening in real-time. As participant Marian Gyamfi noted, it was a day of “learning and connection,” bringing LinkedIn faces into real-world spaces to share thoughts on the future of education.
What’s Next?
This workshop was just the beginning. We launched the AI for Child Development Network to ensure this collaboration and mentorship continues long after the event.
To the educators, policymakers, and parents who joined us: thank you for stepping up to shape the frameworks and lead the conversations. The future belongs to young people who know how to guide technology with wisdom, and it starts with us guiding them.
