At Expanding Boundaries International (EBI), we believe in breaking barriers and creating opportunities for young minds to explore the world. This year, we proudly launched our Ghana High School Cultural Immersion Program, taking a group of Baltimore high school students on a transformative 14-day journey to Ghana. This program wasn’t just about travel. It was about connection, learning, and expanding horizons.
The Birth of EBI: A Mission to Break Barriers
EBI was born out of a desire to make study abroad programs accessible to everyone, especially minority and low-income students. After returning from a study abroad program in China, our founder realized that many students didn’t know such opportunities existed or believed they were out of reach due to financial or academic barriers. EBI was created to change that narrative, helping students see that the world is theirs to explore.
Since 2014, EBI has been on a mission to expose youth to global cultures, workforce diversity, and the endless possibilities that come with stepping outside their comfort zones. From virtual exchanges with students in Ghana to African cooking classes and embassy tours, we’ve been building bridges between communities and cultures. This year, we took a giant leap forward with our first-ever high school study abroad program in Ghana.
A Journey of Connection and Discovery
Our Ghana High School Cultural Immersion Program was designed to be more than just a trip. It was an experience that blended history, culture, and personal growth. What made this program truly unique was the partnership between our U.S. students and their Ghanaian peers. EBI operates seven after-school centers in Ghana, and these centers became the heart of the program. Ghanaian students hosted their U.S. counterparts, creating a bond of friendship and shared learning that will last a lifetime.
The journey began with a month of orientation to prepare our Explorers for their new adventure. During this time, students engaged in discussions on topics such as Identity & Culture in a Globalizing World, Individual vs. Collective Identity, Influences on Collective Identity, Language & Identity, Cultural Taboos in Ghana, Simply Ghana Phrases, and Ghana/USA Relations. This orientation helped students build a foundation of understanding and respect, ensuring they were ready to fully embrace the cultural immersion experience.
Together, the students explored Ghana’s rich history, from its fight for independence to its connection with the American civil rights movement. They visited historic sites like slave castles and old forts, learning about the resilience and strength of those who came before them. These moments of reflection were powerful, sparking conversations about the shared histories of Ghana and the United States.
Hands-On Learning: From Cocoa Farms to Kente Cloth
The program wasn’t just about history. It was about experiencing Ghana’s vibrant culture firsthand. Students visited cocoa farms to learn about one of Ghana’s most important exports. They discovered how cocoa plants are grown, harvested, and transformed into products like chocolate, cocoa butter, and even skincare items. At a chocolate factory, they got to make their own chocolate, a sweet and unforgettable experience.
No trip to Ghana would be complete without exploring the art of Kente cloth. Students visited a Kente weaving site, where they learned about the intricate process of creating Ghana’s iconic, colorful fabric. Once reserved for royalty, Kente cloth is now a symbol of cultural pride. Students even tried their hand at weaving and learned about the meanings behind the patterns and symbols.
To deepen their cultural immersion, students participated in a traditional naming ceremony, where they were given Ghanaian names. This meaningful experience connected them to the local culture in a personal and profound way.
One of the most inspiring aspects of the program was watching the students, both from the U.S. and Ghana, connect and learn from each other. For some Ghanaian students, this was their first time visiting historic sites in their own country, making the experience just as eye-opening for them as it was for their U.S. peers. Together, they built friendships that transcended borders, proving that the world is smaller and more connected than we often realize.
Making It Possible: The Power of Partnerships
This groundbreaking program was made possible with the generous support of Too Fly Foundation and Adom iTechnology. Their contributions helped us launch this initiative and provide our students with an unforgettable experience. Their belief in our mission has been instrumental in breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for our youth.
However, to continue making this program as affordable as possible for our Explorers, we need more business sponsorships. By partnering with us, businesses can help us expand access to life-changing experiences like this, ensuring that financial barriers don’t stand in the way of our students’ dreams.
Looking Ahead: 2026 Ghana Study Tour
We’re thrilled to announce that the 2026 Ghana Study Tour is scheduled for July 6th to July 19th. This program is open to both high school and college students who are ready to explore, learn, and connect. Participants can learn more and sign up at https://expandingboundaries.org/ghana-study-tour/.
