From Farm to Starch: EBI Students Explore Ghana’s Cassava Value Chain
This year at Expanding Boundaries International (EBI), we’ve turned our focus to a fundamental, yet often overlooked, sector: agriculture. We believe that exposing youth to the everyday industries that shape our world is crucial for career readiness and global awareness. This summer, our dedication led students from Frante and Ejura in the Ashanti region visited the Amanten Agro Processing Limited, the largest starch factory in West Africa.
Following the footsteps of our other student groups in Ghana and the US, this cohort dove deep into the world of farming with a special visit to a cassava starch processing factory (Amanten Agro Processing Limited).
Beyond the Farm: The Full Cassava Story
Agriculture is so much more than planting and harvesting. Our students got a firsthand look at the entire cassava value chain, an industry that touches global markets every day:
- Farming & Harvesting: Students learned the labor and science behind cultivating cassava, a staple crop essential to local diets and a major industrial raw material.
- Processing for Starch: They toured the factory, witnessing the fascinating transformation of raw cassava root into industrial-grade starch—a product used in everything from textiles and paper to food thickeners.
- Exportation & Global Trade: Finally, they tracked the finished product as it was prepared for export, connecting the local farm to the international economy.
Unearthing Green Careers: Jobs in Agribusiness
A key goal of the trip was to shatter the old perception of farming as simply manual labor. At every stage of the process, students met professionals who demonstrated that modern agriculture is a field rich with diverse, technology-driven career paths:
- Agricultural Scientists & Agronomists: Experts who develop resilient cassava varieties and sustainable farming techniques.
- Process Engineers & Food Technologists: Specialists who design and manage the machinery and quality control in the starch factory.
- Supply Chain Managers: Professionals who coordinate the transport of raw materials from hundreds of farms to the factory.
- International Trade & Logistics Specialists: The minds that handle the packaging, shipping, customs, and global sale of the final starch product.
- Environmental Compliance Officers: Crucial roles ensuring the processing methods are sustainable and adhere to environmental regulations.
By showcasing these Agri-Tech careers and the sophisticated business operations, we helped our students see the vast opportunities that lie within the agriculture industry. This direct, experiential learning transforms a textbook topic into a tangible career possibility.
