We’re thrilled to share the recent exploits of our annual around-the-world cross-cultural Exploration Tour. This year, our adventure took us to the vibrant streets of Philadelphia, where we immersed ourselves in the rich Puerto Rican culture, strengthened community bonds, and broadened our cultural competency.
Kick-starting our day was a visit to the iconic Rocky Stairs. Standing before the statue of Rocky Balboa, we felt the pulse of Philadelphia’s resilient spirit. The monument, symbolizing determination and courage, echoes the energy of Philly and its diverse inhabitants.
Next, we delved into the heart of Puerto Rican culture at the Taller Puertorriqueño Cultural Center. This center plays a pivotal role in preserving and promoting Puerto Rican heritage in the U.S. We learned there are three main populus Puerto Rican communities in the United States: Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York. Our journey through the center was a vivid tapestry of history, art, and community resilience, narrated by our engaging hosts.
Our tour’s highlight was exploring dance as a cultural expression. We swayed to the rhythm of Salsa, Merengue, and Bachata, three iconic Latin dances deeply rooted in Puerto Rican culture. One of our members, Julie, shared, “Learning these dances was exhilarating! It was like stepping into another world and connecting with its soul.”
We then embarked on a walking tour that gave us an intimate glimpse into how the Puerto Rican community has embraced Philly as their sanctuary. These tours are invaluable tools for understanding the city’s history, culture, and diversity. Each mural, each street corner had a story to tell, painting a picture of the community’s spirit and resilience.
Our day culminated at a local Puerto Rican restaurant where we savored Mofongo, a traditional dish that tantalized our taste buds and offered us another delicious slice of Puerto Rican culture.
All in all, our exploration tour was more than just a trip; it was an enlightening experience that underscored the importance of cultural exchange and understanding. As EBI continues to champion global education and cross-cultural experiences, we invite you to join us on our next adventure.
